Votes for Women

 November 5, 2017

Learn about Cranford’s early suffragettes who labored to give women the vote.

Did you know that ANTI-suffragettes outnumbered suffragettes 5 to 1 in the early 1900’s.

Most New Jerseyans thought that voting women would topple the democracy!  It took great courage

to disagree with the vast majority of their contemporaries and these Cranford women had it!

Read their words, see their photographs and look at the dresses they wore to combat prejudice against women.

All welcome.  Admission is free but donations are greatly appreciated.

Cranford Historical Society Receives Grant from Wells Fargo

Cranford, NJ- October 13, 2016 – The Cranford Historical Society was awarded a $1,000 grant on

October 18, 2016 by Wells Fargo Foundation to support the organization’s mission to preserve and

perpetuate Cranford’s history.

The Cranford Historical Society was founded in 1927 by a small group of Cranford citizens interested in

preserving the town’s unique history.  Entering its 90th Anniversary in 2017, the Society continues to be

dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of Cranford’s history.  Our collection today includes

photographs, scrapbooks, glass negatives, furniture, tools, kitchen and farm implements, costumes, books,

letters and numerous other artifacts related to Cranford and its citizens.  They continue to collect and document

Cranford’s history for future generations.  The Cranford Historical Society serves the people of Cranford,

Union County and Central New Jersey and are the caretakers of two historic homes, Hanson House and

Crane-Phillips House Museum

“We truly appreciate Wells Fargo’s support,” said Margaret Gerlach, President of the Cranford Historical

Society “We will use this grant for our Cranford Historical Society History Award Scholarship Fund given

each year to a Cranford High School senior.”

The grant was awarded as part of Wells Fargo’s Community Connections program, which provides local

branch managers the opportunity to make a $1,000 charitable contribution on behalf of Wells Fargo to a

nonprofit of their choice.  Wells Fargo Northern New Jersey branches distributed a total of $148,000 in grants

to support nonprofit groups, an increase from last year’s $139,000 contributions.

“We host this annual breakfast to celebrate, recognize and say thank you to community heroes such as

the Cranford Historical Society for all of their invaluable contributions and dedicated service to empower

northern New Jersey neighborhoods over the past year,” said Fred Bertoldo, Wells Fargo’s Northern

New Jersey region president.  “Each nonprofit grant recipient was identified by our local branches.

They see which nonprofits are out in the community making a difference in the areas where many team

members and customers are proud to live and work.”

The annual Community Connections program offers Wells Fargo branch managers the opportunity

to provide additional grants to local nonprofits of their choice in New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware,

New York and Pennsylvania.

“Many of our Wells Fargo team members also volunteer or are impacted by the Cranford

Historical Society in some way,”  Mascie Ghahremani,  Wells Fargo Branch Manager. “We’re proud to

help the nonprofits serve our communities wherever we can.”
